Cheerleading for teams and in competition is a highly interactive sport. Crowds love to see cheerleaders launch into the air, perform amazing flips, and land safely in the arms of the other cheerleaders. These stunts, while they are visually exciting and engaging, can go horribly wrong.
Injuries from cheerleading on are on the rise and this sport may have one of the highest injury rates of any sport that is played in North America. This is for a variety of reasons. First, cheerleaders don’t wear protective equipment, and their uniforms provide virtually no cushioning in the event of a fall. Secondly, cheerleaders typically perform on hard surfaces, increasing the risk of injury. And finally, as cheerleaders progress in their proficiency of their sport, they will do increasingly difficult and frequent jumps and impact-oriented moves.
Cheerleading injuries tend to be severe, making up more than half of the catastrophic injuries in female athletes. Cheerleading injuries affect all areas of the body — most commonly the wrists, shoulders, ankles, head, and neck and include bone and muscle traumas to the wrist, ankle, knee, head and neck. These injuries can be gradual and cumulative, or they can happen in a single incident, sometimes with life-altering consequences.
Cheerleading coaches, league organizers, and team owners typically carry a cheerleading insurance policy to protect themselves from financial vulnerability since the risk of injury is so high.
Protecting young athletes from sexual molestation/abuse should be a top priority, especially for cheer squads who travel overnight to competitions and games. It’s critical to have a risk management program in place that includes background checks on all staff, volunteers and other adults who will have access to the cheer participants.
Travel to competitions and games also involves risk. Cheer teams and leagues need the proper coverage to protect their organization, drivers, cheerleaders and vehicles in the event of an accident. This is true for personal vehicles and rented vehicles.
