Ref tackle of Gamecock quarterback ruled an accident

GarciaRefTackle2SEC referee Wilbur Hackett, Jr. will not face disciplinary action for his take down of Gamecock quarterback Steven Garcia during Saturday’s game against LSU. Hacket is a former all-star Kentucky Wildcat linebacker.

After a review of the incident, the SEC office determined Hackett was protecting himself.  There are no plans to take disciplinary action. Rogers Redding, the conference’s coordinator of football officials, reviewed the tape of the play and decided it was inadvertent contact.

“Garcia changes his direction just a tad, which ties up the umpire just a tad and makes it look a lot worse than it really was,” SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said.

The incident didn’t seem to have any bearing on the outcome of the game as the Gamecocks scored shortly after to take the lead 17-10. LSU eventually won the game with a final score of 24-17.

Accident or no accident, we think Hackett’s still got it!
